Dr Richard Kai Yuan Cheng is an Australian trained gastroenterologist and the Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Redcliffe Hospital in Brisbane.
His special interests include:
• Endoscopy / Colonoscopy +/- polyp removal
• Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
• Functional bowel disease – reflux, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), change in bowel habit
• Gastrointestinal bleeding and Iron deficiency Anaemia
• Detection and screening for bowel cancer, Barrett’s Oesophagus
• Liver Disease.
Dr Richard Cheng graduated from the University of Melbourne and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2014. His further studies included a Bachelor of Medical Science through the Austin Hospital Liver Transplant Unit, where he trained in management of chronic liver disease and its complications.
Dr Richard Cheng also completed a clinical fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, providing specialist consultation and multidisciplinary care in gastroenterological diseases to patients in both Brisbane and regional Queensland.
Dr Richard Cheng advocates for rapid access to high quality gastroenterology and endoscopy care for Queensland patients and sits on the steering committee for the Statewide Clinical Network for Gastroenterology.
He is involved in GP education, awareness campaigns for gastroenterological diseases, and has presented at multiple local and international gastroenterology conferences. He is committed to developing holistic and multidisciplinary gastroenterological care for patients – already establishing an Inflammatory Bowel Disease service, gastro-dietetic clinic, and gastro-psychology clinic at Redcliffe hospital. He enjoys teaching and mentoring junior medical staff in his daily work.
